This all began in 2015 when a teenager, Ese Rita Oruru , was kidnapped in Bayelsa by her mother’s Hausa customer,Yinusa.
She was forcefully married to Yinusa, her abductor in Tufa in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.
Her parents tried all they could to rescue her but to no avail.
The parents even went as far as involving the police in the issue but were told that under the laws of Tufa in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State, Ese was no longer their daughter but the wife of Yinusa.
They finally reported the matter to the Emir of Kano, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, to help in their case.
The Emir sent a letter to the Chief of Tufa village for the release of Ese but got no response from them.
#FreeEseOruru campaign has been launched by Nigerians on social media.
Bayelsa and Kano State governors, Seriake Dickson and Abdullahi Ganduje, have joined forces now to combat this injustice by making sure Ese who is now 14years old is returned back to her parents.
“In view of the personal interest demonstrated by the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, we have decided to suspend the rally to give both state governments time to urgently bring Ese back,”KHAN Initiative, an NGO who has been working with Ese’s parents stated.
